Areas to transfer knowledge:
In 2006 to 07 the CCPN has participated in workshops run by the ESRC Knowledge Transfer Team, such as 'Getting Research into Practice (GRIP)', and 'Engaging with Business'. LSE's knowledge transfer expertise and research excellence was recognised by the Higher Education Innovation Fund (HEIF) in 2004.
To build a bilingual website, this is the only bilingual title for social scientific studies on China in the English speaking world, to promote understanding of meanings behind the Chinese and English languages, especially within cultural and academic contexts, which can be seen as a part of Chinese knowledge for social science.
In 2009 the British Academy launched a report entitled ‘Language matters’ which 'discussed concerns that the future of the UK’s world class research base might be threatened by the decline in modern language learning and calls for a series of measures by Universities and Government bodies to address this danger’. In 2011 the British Academy launched its new slogan ‘Language matters more and more’. The question of how to ‘build the capacity of the UK’s knowledge economy to meet national and international challenges’ is relevant here not because of language learning, but to gain better understanding of the meanings behind the English and Chinese languages within social, cultural and economic contexts.
It is expected that some of CCPN Global's edited volumes and book series will continue to be published in dual languages.
According to the Russell Report 'Universities have been founded principally on two sets of activities: teaching and research. However, universities have always made contributions, both directly and indirectly, to decision-making in the wider society; this is their 'Third Mission'. Third stream activities are therefore concerned with the generation, use, application and exploitation of knowledge and other university capabilities outside academic environments. In other words, the Third Stream is about the interaction between universities and the rest of society (Piii, 2002).
In 2006 the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) initiated a strategy 'Third stream as second mission' which defines the 'Third stream as anything other than research and teaching, the two core elements of College activity. Third stream can involve a range of activities such as consultancy, contract research and the commercialisation of research' (see R & E).
From the Templates for HEIF 4 institutional strategies we can see that 'LSE is a research-intensive social science university. Its institutional mission is 'to continue to enhance its position as the leading academic centre of international excellence in the social sciences.' Within this context its key third stream objective is 'to improve the dissemination of the School's research and enhance high level intellectual engagement with an increasingly broader audience', see Knowledge Transfer - Impact of Social Sciences (LSE Blogs).
